La Cala de Mijas sits on the Costa del Sol between Fuengirola to the east and Marbella to the west, in the municipality of Mijas. It started out as a small Andalusian fishing settlement — a scatter of fishermen’s cottages, a couple of bars, a chapel and a school — before Spain’s 1960s tourism boom turned it into a beach town. The old village core still sits close to the seafront, with the newer development spreading inland toward the Sierra de Mijas.<\/p>\n
The area is built around La Cala Golf Resort, three 18-hole courses — Campo Asia, Campo America and Campo Europa — designed by Cabell Robinson in the foothills above the town.
