Vad ar San Pedro de Alcántara?

San Pedro de Alcántara is a working town within Marbella municipality, home to around 39,000 people. It began in 1860 as an agricultural colony founded by Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha, built around sugar cane cultivation on nearly 5,000 hectares straddling three municipalities — one of the most significant agricultural colonies in 19th-century Spain. That history is still visible in the Trapiche de Guadaiza, the colony's 1823 sugar mill, later used as an agricultural school and now restored as a cultural centre.

Unlike the golf estates and gated urbanizations that dominate much of the Marbella coastline, San Pedro is a self-contained town with its own centre, market, schools and beachfront, connected to the sea by a pedestrianised boulevard. It also carries a layer of much older history: Roman-era thermal baths from the 2nd-3rd centuries and a paleochristian basilica dating to the 4th-6th centuries, with double apses and baptismal fonts considered among the best-preserved examples of early Christian architecture on the Iberian Peninsula. These sites are separate from the Trapiche building and sit within the town's archaeological zone.

The result is a mixed, year-round community rather than a seasonal resort — locals working in the town and in nearby hospitality and golf businesses, alongside a long-established foreign resident population drawn by the combination of an authentic town centre, flat walkable streets, and easy access to the beach and to Marbella and Puerto Banús along the coast.
