What is Cala de Mijas?
La Cala de Mijas sits on the Costa del Sol between Fuengirola to the east and Marbella to the west, in the municipality of Mijas. It started out as a small Andalusian fishing settlement -- a scatter of fishermen's cottages, a couple of bars, a chapel and a school -- before Spain's 1960s tourism boom turned it into a beach town. The old village core still sits close to the seafront, with the newer development spreading inland toward the Sierra de Mijas.
The area is built around La Cala Golf Resort, three 18-hole courses -- Campo Asia, Campo America and Campo Europa -- designed by Cabell Robinson in the foothills above the town. The resort draws a steady flow of golf buyers and holidaymakers alongside the residential population, and much of the property market in the hills above La Cala is oriented around it.
Twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the Recinto Ferial hosts a street market with around 115 stalls selling fresh produce, clothing, crafts and food -- one of the longer-running markets on this stretch of coast. The A-7/AP-7 runs along the town's northern edge, giving quick road access to both Fuengirola and Marbella.
Buying in La Cala de Mijas: village by the sea, new build on the hill
La Cala has two markets. The village by the beach is resale: apartments and townhouses in the old core and the streets behind the seafront, walkable to the market, the chapel and the sand. The hill behind it, around La Cala Golf Resort, is new build, and it is where most of what we offer in Mijas is: at the time of writing (October 2026) 360º by Cordia, Lakün, Navigolf Suites, Laguna One, Valley Views and Elysea Suites, apartments and penthouses from around 240,000 euros to just over a million, all on our Mijas Costa new developments page. A new build pays 10 percent VAT and 1.2 percent stamp duty; a resale 7 percent transfer tax today and 6.75 percent from 2027. Resales, when we have them, are on our Mijas Costa property page.
La Cala de Mijas in 2026
The Senda Litoral runs along La Cala's beach and links it to Riviera del Sol and Calahonda on foot, and the three courses of La Cala Resort are ranked against the rest of the coast in our guide to every golf course. Mijas is not our core area and we say so; when a client of ours sells here it goes on our Mijas Costa page. The neighbours, Riviera del Sol, Calahonda and Mijas Pueblo up the hill, have their own guides.

Who lives in Cala de Mijas?
A mix of international retirees and golf buyers in the hillside resort area, and year-round residents -- Spanish and foreign -- in the older village core near the beach. Families are drawn by the schools and the flatter, walkable streets close to the seafront; golf-focused buyers tend to sit higher up, closer to La Cala Golf Resort.
