Costa del Sol Golf Guide: Every Course From Sotogrande to Marbella

There are 39 golf courses between Sotogrande and Marbella, run by 32 clubs, and almost all of them are open to visitors. Green fees for 18 holes go from about €62 in low season at Cabopino to €600 at Valderrama, where Europe won the 1997 Ryder Cup. The best months to play are from mid-September to mid-November and from February to May, which is also when most clubs charge their highest rates. This guide covers every course on this stretch of coast, club by club, with 2026 prices, who can play, how to book and what each one is really like.

I grew up in Marbella, and golf here is not a holiday extra. It shapes where people live, where they buy and how they spend their weekends. When clients ask me which area to choose, the golf course nearby is often part of the answer. So here is everything I would tell a friend.

How golf works here if you are visiting

Booking a tee time

Almost every club takes bookings online, usually through a platform like TeeOne or Golfmanager linked from its own website. Booking direct is often 10% to 20% cheaper than the walk-in rate (Azata, Los Arqueros and Atalaya all advertise this). For the most exclusive clubs, Valderrama and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, visitor tee times are limited to certain days and hours, so book weeks ahead.

Handicap certificate

Most public courses do not ask for one. The more exclusive clubs usually do: Aloha requires a handicap certificate for visitors, and Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and San Roque’s Old Course expect you to play at a reasonable level. Bring your federation card or club handicap certificate, just in case.

Dress code

Collared shirts with sleeves for men, no jeans, no gym wear, no swimwear, and golf shoes with soft spikes. Tailored shorts are fine almost everywhere. Valderrama and Las Brisas are the strictest: jeans, cargo shorts and flip-flops are not allowed anywhere on the property, and at Valderrama phone calls on the course are not allowed.

Buggies, twilight and 9 holes

A buggy usually costs €40 to €54 for 18 holes, and some clubs include a shared buggy in the green fee (Azata, Doña Julia). Almost every course sells a cheaper twilight rate for late afternoon rounds, often 15% to 25% off, and many offer 9-hole rounds, which are perfect in summer or with children.

Seasons and prices

This surprises many visitors: autumn is not the cheap season here. From mid-September to mid-November, and again from February to May, the weather is perfect and most clubs charge their highest rates. Los Naranjos, for example, charges €177 in high season (28 September to 15 November) and €139 in low season. The cheapest months are the hot summer and the Christmas period.

Membership

If you live here or plan to, an annual membership quickly pays off. Some examples for 2026: Doña Julia from €2,200 a year, Los Naranjos from €3,360 (Bronze, 40 rounds) to €4,568 (Gold, with unlimited padel), and at the top, Las Brisas at €35,000 to join plus €4,000 a year.

Which course suits you?

  • Beginners and families: Estepona Golf, El Paraíso, La Cañada, Tramores, Greenlife, PG by Magna, El Higueral, Casares Costa and the Guadalmina pitch and putt.
  • Relaxed round with friends, good value: Azata, Valle Romano, Atalaya, Doña Julia, La Duquesa, Cabopino, Santa María, Los Arqueros.
  • Championship golf you can book: Los Naranjos, Aloha, San Roque, La Reserva, Marbella Club Golf Resort, Alferini, Río Real, Guadalmina Sur.
  • Once in a lifetime: Valderrama, Finca Cortesín, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande.
  • If you can get in: Las Brisas and La Zagaleta, members and their guests.

Sotogrande and San Roque

This is where Spanish golf history was written. Sotogrande is a planned resort from the 1960s, about 45 minutes from Estepona, with the most famous cluster of courses in Spain. For the area itself, see our Sotogrande guide.

The name every serious golfer on this coast measures everything else against. The cork oaks, the tight fairways and the famous 17th make it a course you plan a trip around, not one you book on a whim. Expensive, yes, and worth it once in your life.

Courses that have closed

You may still find these on old lists and maps:

Monte Mayor (Benahavís): opened in 1989, closed in 2011. Bought by investors in 2014 but never reopened.

El Campanario (Estepona): listed by Google as permanently closed.

La Dama de Noche (Nueva Andalucía): the floodlit 9-hole course that let you play at night. Its website is no longer online and we could not confirm it is still open.

Golf and property on the Costa del Sol

Golf tourists already own more than 123,000 homes in Andalusia, worth about €30.1 billion (Turismo Andaluz, 2024). In my experience, frontline golf homes hold their value well because the view is protected: nobody can build on a fairway. If living on or near a course is on your list, have a look at our golf properties selection, or use Find My Area to see which part of the coast fits you. For a wider view of the market, read our Marbella property market 2026 analysis.
