Riviera del Sol sits on the Mijas Costa coastline between Fuengirola and Marbella, immediately next to Calahonda and a short drive from La Cala de Mijas. It is a large, long-established residential area rather than a single gated development, made up of successive phases of apartment blocks, townhouses and villas built up around the Miraflores Golf Club course, with the AP-7/A-7 motorway running along its inland edge and the beach a few minutes' walk from the lower part of the urbanisation.
The area grew up alongside its golf course: Miraflores Golf Club, designed by Falco Nardi, opened in 1990 and remains the organising feature of the neighbourhood, with many of the streets and residential blocks arranged around its fairways. A commercial centre serving Riviera del Sol and neighbouring Calahonda has developed over the years into one of the coast's more varied dining strips, known locally for its concentration of international restaurants alongside the usual Spanish bars and cafes.
Day to day, residents rely on a mix of large supermarkets (Carrefour and Mercadona both have stores in the area) and smaller local shops, plus pharmacies such as Farmacia Riviera and Farmacia del Sol. The nearest schools are in the surrounding Mijas Costa area, including CEIP El Olmo, CEIP Jardín Botánico and IES Cala de Mijas for secondary education.

Riviera del Sol works because it has what the larger urbanisations around it have, at a lower price: Miraflores golf in the middle, the beach below the lower streets, the Carrefour and Mercadona centre for daily shopping and the Senda Litoral along the sand to Calahonda and La Cala. A long-standing mix of northern European residents and retirees, many of whom bought here for the golf and the settled, low-key character of the area, alongside younger buyers and families drawn by the relatively central Mijas Costa location between Fuengirola and Marbella. Turnover is lower than in newer developments further along the coast, and a good share of owners use their property part-time or rent it out during the summer season.
