It is a large, long-established residential area rather than a single gated development, made up of successive phases of apartment blocks, townhouses and villas built up around the Miraflores Golf Club course, with the AP-7/A-7 motorway running along its inland edge and the beach a few minutes' walk from the lower part of the urbanisation.

The area grew up alongside its golf course: Miraflores Golf Club, designed by Falco Nardi, opened in 1990 and remains the organising feature of the neighbourhood, with many of the streets and residential blocks arranged around its fairways. A commercial centre serving Riviera del Sol and neighbouring Calahonda has developed over the years into one of the coast's more varied dining strips, known locally for its concentration of international restaurants alongside the usual Spanish bars and cafes.

Day to day, residents rely on a mix of large supermarkets (Carrefour and Mercadona both have stores in the area) and smaller local shops, plus pharmacies such as Farmacia Riviera and Farmacia del Sol. The nearest schools are in the surrounding Mijas Costa area, including CEIP El Olmo, CEIP Jardín Botánico and IES Cala de Mijas for secondary education.
