La Alcaidesa sits on the coast between San Roque and La Línea de la Concepción, right on the Bay of Gibraltar. The development dates back to the early 1990s, built by La Alcaidesa Inmobiliaria SA, a joint venture between the UK construction group Costain and Banesto. From the start it was planned around golf and pueblo-style low-rise architecture rather than high-density blocks, which is still the visible difference between La Alcaidesa and the older tourist strip further along the coast.
The golf side of the development has changed hands and names since. Alcaidesa Golf's Links course opened in 1992 (designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark) alongside the Dave Thomas-designed Heathland course. Ownership passed through Banco Santander in 2015 and then to Grupo Millennium in 2019, and the resort was rebranded La Hacienda Links Golf Resort, with the Links course redesigned by Kurtis Bowman and reopened in 2022. In February 2025 the Fairmont La Hacienda Costa del Sol opened on site: a five-star, roughly EUR130 million property with 311 rooms and villas, giving the development its first branded flagship hotel.
The wider Alcaidesa area also includes Alcaidesa Marina, a working marina with several hundred berths on the bay, and the Blue Flag beaches of La Alcaidesa and Sobrevela. Gibraltar is close by road, and since the EU-UK treaty took effect in mid-2026 the land border crossing no longer involves routine checks, which has made the day-to-day commute from this side of the bay considerably easier than it used to be.

Alcaidesa sits a short drive from the border, making a regular Gibraltar commute realistic.
