La Zagaleta began in 1990, when a group of investors led by Enrique Pérez Flores bought a 900-hectare former hunting estate called La Baraka – previously owned by Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi – and set out to build a private residential estate rather than a resort. Construction of the first golf course, designed by Bradford Benz, began in 1992; the Club de Campo La Zagaleta sporting association followed in 1994. Today the estate holds around 420 homes among cork-oak and pine forest, two private golf courses, an equestrian centre with 23 stables and 4 rings, a clubhouse accessible only to members and their guests, and a private heliport. Only two guarded entrances serve the entire 900-hectare property.

Golf is central to life here: 9 of the roughly 60 golf courses on the entire Costa del Sol lie within Benahavís’s boundaries. The municipality sits at the western edge of what is often called the Golf Valley, with courses including Flamingos Golf, La Quinta Golf, Los Arqueros (a Severiano Ballesteros design) and the two private courses inside La Zagaleta. Add Villa Padierna and El Paraíso, and you have close to a dozen courses within a 15-minute drive. Note that the on-site Monte Mayor course, once part of the same valley, has been closed since 2011.

Among the most consistently praised: Los Abanicos, a long-running local favourite for grilled meats; Restaurante Sabor et Hotel and Restaurant Amanhavis, both highly rated; Karas Grill et Delhi Darbar Indian Restaurant for something different; and The Irishman Benahavís. Sunday lunch in the village followed by a walk along the Río Guadalmina is a local ritual that crosses every price bracket.
